Waste Segregation in Action
Our curious Grade 4 learners recently took a field trip to the Dry Waste Collection Centre in Bandra, run by the Aasra Welfare Foundation along with the BMC. They got an up-close look at how Mumbai’s dry waste is sorted into more than 48 categories — including plastic, e-waste, glass, textiles, and multi-layered packaging (MLP). Students walked through primary and secondary segregation areas, learned how different materials are recovered, and even watched machines compress plastic into neat, compact bales ready for recycling.
On another day, they explored the banks of the Mithi River, where they reflected on issues like water pollution, sewage discharge, and how waste impacts river life. They asked thoughtful questions about city sewage systems, landfill overflow, and what can be done to restore our environment.
These hands-on experiences brought their classroom learning to life and sparked some great conversations around sustainability, waste management, and how even small actions can make a big difference.
